The Art of Letting Go: What is Yin Yoga and Why Singapore Needs It

Living in Singapore means operating in a constant state of “doing”. We are always moving, planning, and achieving. In wellness terms, this highly active, heat-building lifestyle is very “Yang”. But to achieve true balance, our bodies and minds desperately need the opposite. They need “Yin”.

Moving Beyond the Muscles

Most traditional workouts and active yoga flows focus on stretching and strengthening your muscles. Yin Yoga takes a completely different approach. It is a slow, meditative practice designed to target your deep connective tissues—the fascia, ligaments, and joints.

To access these deeper layers, you do not use muscular effort. Instead, you use gravity and time. In a Yin class, you will typically only do a handful of floor-based postures, but you will hold each one for anywhere from three to five minutes.

At first glance, lying on a bolster for five minutes might sound incredibly easy. However, finding stillness is often the most challenging part of the practice.

When you stop moving, the mind tends to speed up. Yin teaches you the art of sitting with discomfort (without moving into pain) and breathing through it. It is a profound practice of mental resilience. Over time, you learn how to actively release deeply held tension, both physical and emotional.
