The story of the Reformer Pilates rooted in ingenuity and a passion for health. The method was created by Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer. Since child, he was a weak kid that often fell sick, then he dedicated his life to improving his physical strength through diverse disciplines like boxing, gymnastics, and yoga, eventually developing his own system of exercise called “Contrology“.

The actual Reformer machine was conceived during World War I. While interned in England, Joseph began attaching bed springs and straps to hospital beds to allow bedridden patients to exercise and strengthen their muscles against resistance.

After the world war one ended, he moved to New York and opened his studio. Then, he refined his apparatus there, naming it the Universal Reformer because it was believed to helps body reform. It quickly became a favourite among dancers and athletes for rehabilitation and cross training.
